Importance of Personal Counseling
Chicago Relationship Counseling with Robert J. Smith, LCSW
Feeling like your head is up in the clouds and like your life is on hold?
You can learn how to form a new life road map for yourself.
So, you might be thinking about entering into personal or relationship counseling while never having had the experience before. Or you may have had previous therapy that did not work for you. You don’t know what to expect when meeting a clinical social work therapist. All you know is that your life seems to be directionless. You might feel unhappy and are feeling much emotional pain, but don’t know what to do. You may be experiencing relationship problems, or are suffering from a chronic medical condition, a major loss, or a past trauma or abuse. You might be feeling helpless, hopeless, and even suicidal.
What makes the counseling that I provide so valuable, is that, I am a trained therapist who is there to listen to you talk about your concerns, and to guide you into forming a new image and direction of what you wish your life to be like. I provide therapy in a private quiet office where what is discussed is kept confidential within the bounds of the laws of the State of Illinois and the Federal laws of privacy also known as HIPAA. I also follow the ethical principles of the National Association of Social Workers.
My approach to doing therapy is to first gain an understanding about your concerns, to validate your feelings, and then to work collaboratively with you to start on a new life journey. I am here to help you begin to walk on the new path until you are ready to move along independently, with community support, or with my continued ongoing support and guidance.
Therapy can be brief (8-12) sessions and usually 45 to 60 minutes in length with being more specific problem focused. It can also be longer-term ranging from months to years depending upon your personal needs. Longer-term therapy can also be goal directed where you can develop skills and tools to better manage medical concerns, grief and loss, physical pain, and more complex life problems of trauma and abuse.
